Press Conference Day at new Hybrid Supercross / Motocross event - The Monster Energy Cup

Thursday, was the opening press conference at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. It's the 'start' of activities of the first ever Monster Energy Cup - a brand new type of motorcycle racing event combining Supercross and Motocross on one track.

The press conference was started and hosted by a former Supercross and Motocross Champion, Jeff Emig. Jeff welcomed all in attendance, and explained that this event has been 12 months in planning between Feld Motor sports and Monster Energy beverage company. It's a special 'hybrid' track, combining Supercross and MX style sections. The track was primarily designed by two people very well known in Supercross and Motocross - 8 time AMA National Motocross and Supercross Champion Jeremy McGrath (best ever in Supercross, 7 time champion, 72 main event wins), and 15 time AMA National MX and Supercross Champion Ricky Carmichael (most wins ever in combined AMA Motocross and Supercross).

Georges St. Pierre is hoping for a Super Bowl weekend return

When Georges St. Pierre realized that his knee was too injured for him to fight at UFC 137, he was shaken up. He admitted that he let some emotion show when he had to pull out of the bout with Carlos Condit.

"I'm not going to lie, I cried yesterday," St-Pierre told SportsNets. "I had a ton of pressure falling off my shoulders, because for the last few days I was in the mindset that I was nervous for the fight. I was excited for the fight but I was also nervous to know if I was going to be able to fight."

He sprained his MCL while training on Tuesday afternoon. Though it was an injury serious enough to pull him from the fight, it won't keep him out for too long. He is hoping to be able to fight on the UFC's Super Bowl weekend card, normally one of the bigger events on their calendar.

"I would say maybe end of January, possibly the beginning of February [for my return]?Super Bowl, around this time," St-Pierre said.

Condit told Cagewriter that he was hoping to fight GSP for the belt by the end of the year, but with GSP's timetable, Condit will have to wait a bit longer.

Condit let down, but still focused on St. Pierre and the belt

Carlos Condit has been through a roller coaster while preparing UFC 137. He started out by preparing for a bout with B.J. Penn. After Nick Diaz's no-show for multiple press obligations, Condit was given the title shot. Today, he found out Georges St. Pierre was injured, and that Condit's title shot would have to wait until December or January.

Still, Condit told Cagewriter that he's not angry about the turn of events.

"It's a letdown, but it's the nature of the sport. I'm going to stay positive, keep training, and be even better when the fight comes."

He said taking another fight in the meantime just doesn't make sense.

"Nothing's been offered, and me and my manager discussed it, and taking another fight doesn't make sense on a lot of levels. As far as my career goes, it doesn't make sense, from a money standpoint, it doesn't make sense."

GSP's injury will not keep him out of training for too long, so Condit will wait for GSP and the title shot.

"In this situation, Georges isn't out six or eight months or anything like that. He's sprained his knee. It's going to be a short recovery, and hopefully we'll be able to get this thing done, and get in the cage by the end of the year, or early next year at the latest."

Both Jake Ellenberger and Josh Koscheck hinted that they would be ready to take the fight, but Condit is focused on the belt.

"I have the opportunity to fight for the title, and I have my heart set on Georges. When and if I beat Georges, I'll take on Ellenberger. I'll give him a rematch. I'll fight anyone, but right now, I have my heart set on Georges."

In the meantime, Condit will not change his training routine.

"My job is to get up every day and go to the gym and train, and improve my skills, and improve myself as a fighter. That's what I'm going to do tomorrow. I'll be able to eat a little bit more, and enjoy not so strict of a diet, but that's about the only difference. "

What will that cheat food be?

"Pizza or enchiladas," Condit said with a laugh.

White now in charge of Showtime talks, leaves UFC monopoly claims to morons and haters

LAS VEGAS - Dana White has taken the negotiating reins with Showtime.

The UFC president on Wednesday met with executives from the premium cable channel to resume talks on the future of a broadcast partnership Zuffa LLC assumed with the purchase of Strikeforce.

Previously, UFC executive Lorenzo Fertitta had spearheaded negotiations. But with the recent exodus of executive Ken Hershman from Showtime to HBO, White reversed his stance on getting involved in the process.

Gilbert Melendez's trainer says his fight with Jorge Masvidal "absolutely" his last in Strikeforce

UFC President Dana White caused a bit of a stir earlier this month when he said he that the UFC wanted to bring Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez over as soon as possible. However, it turned out that Melendez was still going to be facing Jorge Masvidal in Strikeforce this December. Now, in an interview with Tatame.com, Melendez's trainer says that the Masvidal fight will be the Champ's final bout for Strikeforce:

"Absolutely it'll be his last fight (in Strikeforce). I believe Melendez is the best of the world in this division. [Masvidal is] a very dangerous fight. Melendez has nothing to win, there's the problem. I didn't want him to do it. I believe he's gonna win, he's a better fighter, but in any fight you can either win or lose and it's not different this time. Melendez has everything to lose and nothing to gain. He needs to fight the top fighters. Masvidal sometimes is good, but sometimes he loses to some guys nobody knows."

UFC 137 PREVIEW: Penick's breakdown and fight predictions for "Penn vs. Diaz" event in Las Vegas

B.J. Penn vs. Nick Diaz (Welterweight)

Though the circumstances surrounding the booking of this fight certainly put a damper on the initial excitement for the fight, this bout between Penn and Diaz is one of most intriguing fights available in the welterweight division.

Diaz has had a lot of success outside of the UFC over the last several years, scoring highlight reel victories in entertaining fights from EliteXC to DREAM and Strikeforce. His 2011 wins over Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos and Paul Daley were thrilling displays, and he's had good performances against a number of other opponents, but this is the first time in a long time that he's gone up against a fighter considered to be "elite."

For Penn, after going to a draw with Jon Fitch in February and having an exciting matchup on paper with Carlos Condit ripped away from him, he now gets to go into the cage against a fighter that simply doesn't have boring fights.

Diaz is going to attempt to use his reach to damage Penn with his relentless striking attack, but should Penn bring the fight to the ground he's got a dangerous jiu jitsu game off his back as well and won't be afraid to fight there.

On Penn's end, putting Diaz on his back and utilizing his own top game may be a safer strategy than going toe to toe with Diaz on the feet, but his boxing game is very good in its own right and he doesn't fear the firefight.

Diaz has a lot of fans that believe he can beat anyone at anytime. The problem is, we haven't seen him against elite competition in quite some time, and even during his exciting Strikeforce run, he has had problems against fighters that will strike with him.

He was losing to Santos in January after getting brutalized in the first and second rounds by a series of leg kicks and good, hard hitting combinations, but managed to goad him to the ground and lock on a submission at the end of the second round. Against Daley, he got dropped a couple of times in the round, but was able to recover and send Daley to the canvas and get the stoppage in the first.

The point is, while Diaz has a high level of offensive output, he allows himself to get hit entirely too much to be really successful standing against a puncher like Penn. He hasn't been stopped by anything other than cuts in nine years, but he's come close to having the lights turned off.

If Penn can knock him loopy and drop him to the mat, he's got the ground game to keep him down and to attempt to work him from there. If the fight gets finished, I'd imagine it would be Penn dropping Diaz and then getting to a submission before Diaz knows where he is, but as it stands I think two rounds of Penn connecting will give him an edge, even if he fades down the stretch.

PREDICTION: Penn via unanimous decision

Matt Mitrione vs. Cheick Kongo (Heavyweight)

Mitrione, a former defensive player in the National Football League, has spent his entire MMA career within the UFC. He entered The Ultimate Fighter's 10th season with no professional experience, and has won five straight fights to begin his career in the UFC.

Kongo has almost five times as many fights as Mitrione, yet enters the event a somewhat surprising underdog. The 6'4" Frenchman has a good chin, though he can be cracked, and a very good striking game himself. His weakness has always been fighters that can put him on his back, though in a couple of his more recent fights he's found himself getting hit often on the feet.

He scored a huge come from behind knockout on an overzealous Pat Barry in June, who had knocked him down twice and was looking for the kill, so even if Mitrione gets him hurt in this fight he'll need to be cautious.

However, Mitrione's inexperience doesn't mean he doesn't deserve to be the favorite. With the way Barry dropped Kongo, not to mention memory of Frank Mir brutalizing him in the not-so-distant past, Mitrione's heavy hands and tough chin match up well against Kongo.

Both fighters are going to get hit in this fight. Both fighters are going to get hurt in this fight. The winner will have to go through whatever their opponent offers them and continue on, and at this stage, Mitrione's got what it takes to keep his run alive. It's not going to be easy, and he may have to survive some big shots, but I think Mitrione takes this one.

PREDICTION: Mitrione via TKO in the second round

Roy Nelson vs. Mirko Cro Cop (Heavyweight)

Both Nelson and Cro Cop are looking for redemption in this bout. Nelson for an embarrassing performance against Frank Mir, one caused in major part to a decision to fight while battling pneumonia, and Cro Cop for consecutive knockout losses to Mir and Brendan Schaub, both of which came in fairly ugly fights.

Cro Cop's UFC career has been a disappointment, there's just no other way to put it. He's had a few victories in the Octagon, but he's been nothing close to the fighter he was in his prime in Pride, and has just looked off in his most recent run, which was most apparent in fights against Junior dos Santos and Frank Mir.

He's also at the end of his career here into this fight. He's said multiple times that, win or lose, it's likely his last bout, and he's out to have an entertaining fight with Nelson. Because of how badly received the Mir fight was, it's likely that Cro Cop is going out on his shield in this fight, to give the best show he can even if it means going head first (literally) into danger.

The key factor to consider in this fight is that Nelson is nearly impossible to finish, and Cro Cop has been stopped in brutal fashion numerous times. Nelson hits very hard himself, but also has the chin to absorb a ridiculous amount of punishment, whereas that's likely not the case with Cro Cop. I think we'll get a fight out of the Croatian, but unfortunately he's past the point in his career where he's truly going to have much success in the cage. I hope he can prove everyone wrong, as it would be enjoyable for fans to see him regain some of the aura he's lost in the UFC, it's just not likely in the cards.

PREDICTION: Nelson via TKO in the second round

Scott Jorgensen vs. Jeff Curran (Bantamweight)

Longtime veteran Curran makes just his second appearance ever in the UFC in this bout, and it comes nearly eight years after the first. The always competitive "Big Frog" had a rough run the last time he was under the Zuffa banner, dropping four straight fights in the WEC, and his road doesn't get any easier with this fight.

Jorgensen is one fight removed from challenging for the Bantamweight Championship, and that one fight was a vicious first round knockout in the guard of Ken Stone. Jorgensen's got the speed edge in the matchup, but Jorgensen's got a good well-rounded game and a lot of experience on his side as well.

Curran enters as a heavy underdog, and Jorgensen should be the favorite based on their respective results recently, but Curran can't be counted out. He's going to be a stiff test for Jorgensen and will push him throughout the entirety of the fight.

He may not take the edge in the bout, but he's going to make Jorgensen earn a victory over him.

PREDICTION: Jorgensen via unanimous decision

George Roop vs. Hatsu Hioki (Featherweight)

Hioki, considered widely to be one of the top featherweight fighters in the world, makes his UFC debut in this bout. However, because his record was built in Japan there is trepidation as to whether or not he can be successful in the U.S.

Roop marks a very good litmus test for that point. He's had some very solid wins over the last couple of years, including a nice head kick knockout of Chan Sung Jung and his three round decimation of Josh Grispi; but he's also been stopped by Mark Hominick in quick fashion and has seven career losses on his record.

Hioki has just four decision losses on his record, the most recent being a split to Michihiro Omigawa two years ago. He's won nine of his last 10 and is 12-1-1 dating back to 2007. If any fighter is poised to continue success begun in Japan, it's Hioki, and he also has a very good skill set that happens to have been Roop's downfall on numerous occasions.

12 of Hioki's career wins have come by submission, almost all of them being of the triangle choke/armbar variety. Armlocks haven't been kind to Roop in the past, and it's something he'll need to constantly be wary of.

Overall this should be a competitive and entertaining featherweight fight to kick off the pay-per-view broadcast, and I think Hioki can avoid the pitfalls that have hit a number of his colleagues from Japanese organizations.

PREDICTION: Hioki via submission in the third round

======SPIKE TV PRELIMINARY CARD======

Donald Cerrone vs. Dennis Siver (Lightweight)

Dennis Siver has been an interesting success story over the last couple of years. His first stint in the UFC had him out of the organization after four fights when he managed to win just one of those bouts. After a win outside the organization, he got a call back to return, and has won seven of his last eight in increasingly impressive fashion.

His sole loss in that run was a decision to Ross Pearson, but he's rattled off four consecutive wins since that bout, including two very impressive performances this year over George Sotiropoulos and Matt Wiman.

Cerrone enters this event as one of the hottest fighters in the division. After suffering a second loss to Ben Henderson last April, Cerrone has put together a highly impressive five fight winning streak, looking great against Jamie Varner, Paul Kelly, and most recently Charles Oliveira, with less inspiring wins over Chris Horodecki and Vagner Rocha sprinkled in.

Not only does Cerrone have the ground advantage over Siver in this fight, but he's got a five inch height advantage, bringing along a significant reach advantage as well. With his striking game continuing to improve and his ground game as dangerous as just about any, Cerrone can continue his rapid ascent up the lightweight ladder in this fight.

Siver's been very good as of late, and finds ways to take his opponents out of their games, but that's going to be a tough task against Cerrone. Cerrone's got a very good chin and has improved a lot of his weaknesses, making big strides specifically in the last year. This is Cerrone's fight to lose, and I don't think he will.

PREDICTION: Cerrone via submission in the second round

Tyson Griffin vs. Bart Palaszewski (Bantamweight)

Griffin halted a three fight losing streak when he dropped to the featherweight division this June, defeating Manny Gamburyan by decision. He was one of the more successful fighters in the lightweight division from his debut in 2006 until his slide that began in 2010, but while his fights were relatively exciting, his style didn't lead to many finishes and essentially you know what you're going to get from a Tyson Griffin fight.

Palaszewski had an up and down run in the WEC, and now finally gets to make his UFC debut as he drops to the featherweight division himself. He had won three straight WEC fights before a split decision loss to Kamal Shalorus, and he's likely a big underdog only because of his layoff at this point.

He's got a good striking game and will be a tough fight, and if Griffin gets too overconfident in his striking game he could run into a bad punch like he did against Takanori Gomi, and he needs to avoid that. He'll likely make the cut to 145 lbs. more easily the second time in a row, while Palaszewski may have some issues in that area. Ultimately, that could be the deciding factor in which fighter comes out on top here.

PREDICTION: Griffin via unanimous decision

Cesar Gracie will ask to bypass Carlos Condit for shot at GSP if Nick Diaz stops B.J. Penn at UFC 137

With Georges St-Pierre suffering a couple of leg injuries, taking him out of this weekend's UFC 137 card, the UFC held out Carlos Condit to face St-Pierre in early 2012. However, if Cesar Gracie has his way, it will be Nick Diaz jumping into that spot should he defeat B.J. Penn in impressive fashion on Saturday night.

"This is the UFC so there's always that chance," Gracie said in an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. "There's no question about it that I will ask for that if Nick has a tremendous performance and he can finish B.J., I would ask for that."

"But the biggest thing is if the fans want it. If the fans all ask for that, Dana [White] is a smart guy. He knows the sport is about the fans. So who knows?"

Should Diaz defeat Penn in impressive fashion at UFC 137, he'll have an argument for earning the shot, but after what happened into the originally scheduled fight with St-Pierre, that may not be enough to bypass Condit's shot.

Penick's Analysis: I don't think the UFC would have held him out if they were entertaining the notion of slotting someone ahead of him out of this fight, but that could also be something they simply hadn't thought of. It's dependent upon Diaz actually pulling off the win, of course, but even if he does so in impressive fashion, the fight with St-Pierre is going to sell on St-Pierre's name and not his opponent at this point. Condit has just as much earned a shot at the title as Diaz, even if Diaz defeats Penn, so it would still be hard to argue for putting Diaz ahead of Condit, especially with Condit being kept on the sidelines specifically for the title fight.

You tell us: Where is the fight capital of the world?

At a press conference in Toronto to officially announce UFC 140's main event of Jon Jones vs. Lyoto Machida, Dana White called Toronto the fight capital of the world. Considering how Toronto sold out the 55,000-seat Rogers Center for UFC 129 in April, it's not a stretch to commend the city for its support of MMA. But is it the capital?

Las Vegas, Nev. -- The homebase for Zuffa also hosts more UFC events than any other city every year. Recently, Sin City has also become the home for Strikeforce: Challengers shows, and it is also the home of some of the best MMA gyms.

Los Angeles -- The UFC turns to L.A. for its big heavyweight bouts, and the city turns out for every bout. If Orange County is included, the Los Angeles-area also is the home to Anderson Silva, Tito Ortiz and Mark Munoz's successful gym.

Rio de Janeiro -- With the exuberant way Rio responded to UFC 134, they jumped right onto this list. They also deserve to be here on the back of the Nogueira brothers, fighters born and raised in Rio. No word on if they danced along the sand.

Sydney -- Australia has embraced MMA wholeheartedly, selling out huge events the past two winters. Not only that, but fighters like George Sotiropoulos gleefully sell their country as an MMA haven at every opportunity.

Tokyo -- Though Japanese MMA isn't what it once was, Tokyo will always have a place in MMA's lore because of its role in launching Pride Fighting Championships. Their crowds are not the raucous masses of humanity that are in Sydney or Rio, but Japanese fights are spectacles like no other.

Toronto -- Dana White's choice for the world's MMA capital has plenty of fight fans and fighters. Though it is the city that dumped Sean Pierson from their police department for being a UFC fighter, it is also the city that welcome the UFC with open arms the second it was regulated there.

With an ill father and a newborn, Grispi puts MMA on the backburner

What's wrong with Josh Grispi? That was the question on plenty of lips around the MMA community.

It turns out that life got in the way ... for now.

The fast-rising prospect saw his career derailed a bit by some trouble in the Octagon, but now all it has gone on hold as the 23-year-old is dealing with a situation that folks 20 and 30 years older would have trouble juggling.

In mid-August, Grispi's wife got through a difficult child birth when the UFC featherweight found out that his father had a brain tumor. On Aug. 14, just two days after Josh Jr. was born, Grispi's father, Richard, found out that the earache he was suffering from was a lot more serious.

"He's one to not go to the hospital. He'll just tough it out," Grispi told the Boston Herald at the beginning of October. "But I called and made an appointment for him and when he went in they rushed him right from the CT scan in Plymouth to Tufts in Boston. He didn't know what the heck what was going on."

It was a real wake-up call for the younger Grispi.

"I was a mess as soon as I knew he needed brain surgery," Grispi said. "I was just thinking it was his first grandson and he was just born and now with all this stuff, I want my dad to be there with his grandson. There was just a lot of stuff going through my head."

With training camp for UFC 136 about to take off, the -native had no choice but to drop out of his fight against Matt Grice.

"All I can think about is I don't want my dad to see my last two fights be losses," Grispi said. "I want to get back in there. But I don't think I should have even fought those two fights (2010 losses against Dustin Poirier and ). I should have just taken care of myself when I needed to, but I needed money. I was having a kid so I needed to save up more money. I was fighting for the wrong reasons."

Grispi has a bright future in front of him. Now it's time to take of the real important things in his life. MMA can wait, hopefully he comes back with the kind of focus that got him very close to landing a 2010 title shot against Jose Aldo Jr.

"Now I want to get back into it and love it again and not look at it like a job anymore," Grispi said. "My other (pre-UFC) fights, it wasn't like a job. I was just having fun, going in there and doing my thing. Then I put all this pressure on myself and (the losses) happened. I'm looking to get back in there as quickly as possible, but not to the point where I can't go in there and have a blast like I usually do."

MMA's "Mighty" Mia Hayes Succumbs to Breast Cancer

Not only women?s MMA, but the sport in general was dealt a saddening blow Sunday, as the highly inspirational ?Mighty? Mia Hayes lost a long battle with breast cancer; she was 35 years old.<BR><BR>

Hayes, a mother of four, was diagnosed in 2008, with a future living prognosis of just 1-5 years.<BR><BR>

While not training in Tae Kwon Do, and mixed martial arts (she held an amateur record of 3-0), Hayes ran a day care. She is survived by her children and her husband, Youssouf Camara. Camara (who previously quit his job in order to care for Mia and their children) and family are dealing with a tough situation, and we offer our sincerest condolences.<BR><BR>

Anderson Silva - "Only I myself can speak about my fights, my plans and career"

Anderson Silva's manager Ed Soares has been making the rounds in the last couple of weeks with comments about Chael Sonnen and his deservedness of another shot at Anderson Silva. Now, after the above picture surfaced this weekend, it's brought some pointed comments from the UFC Middleweight Champion, who said on Twitter he wasn't very happy with what appears to be a friendly exchange between the two. Not only that, he made it clear that any statements on what he will or won't be doing with his career will be coming from him and only him.

Said Silva (translated by Fighter's Only):

"I didn?t like this photograph either. I take this opportunity to say that only I myself can speak about my fights, my plans and career."

"I'm currently in therapy [to recover from shoulder injury] and as soon as I am definite with UFC my next bout, I will let everybody know."

Nick Diaz feels UFC 137 opponent B.J. Penn "much better" than Georges St-Pierre

Nick Diaz once again finds himself in the main event of UFC 137 this week with the man he was initially scheduled to face, Georges St-Pierre, forced out of the card with an injury. However, while he is no longer facing the man considered widely to be the best welterweight in the world, Diaz actually believes he's facing a better fighter in B.J. Penn.

"I think B.J. is a lot better fighter to be honest with you, on a technical standpoint," Diaz said during last week's media teleconference. "He's much better at jiu-jitsu, boxing, even on a physical level I wouldn't count him out."

"I think he's a much better fighter than GSP all-around.?

That doesn't mean Diaz is happy about his opponent switch. He lost out on his shot at St-Pierre after no-showing consecutive press conferences in September, and now that he has to face Penn it's not something that's sitting well with the Strikeforce Champ.

"I'm not happy about it at all," Diaz said about fighting Penn. "I'm fighting a guy that's my friend, or was my friend and now I'm fighting this guy. I signed to fight [St-Pierre]. I thought we had a deal. That's kind of where [my head is] at on it."

Diaz said he would still rather fight St-Pierre, and the reason he came to the UFC was to fight for the belt and to make more money.

"I would have preferred to fight GSP, of course, because it's not like I'm fighting somebody that I already know," Diaz said. "I'm fighting for the title. That's why I started this. That's why I'm fighting for the UFC, because I came to fight for the title. I came for the money. I came to fight for the title. That was the GSP fight. Now I'm not getting that fight."

To add to that disappointment, he has trained with Penn in the past and the two fighters had been friendly with each other. Those outside factors don't sit well with Diaz, but now there's nothing he can do about it and he'll step into the cage anyway.

?I'm going to deal with it. This is hard times, just like it's been. I'm not expecting it to get any easier. This definitely doesn't make it any easier. I don't like fighting people that I already know, or I've already met, or trained with, or have video on me. We've spent a lot of time training together. It's kind of shady feelings going into fights like that. I'm just doing what my manager says.?

Penick's Analysis: Diaz is firmly in the camp that believes it was only St-Pierre's size that led to his second win over Penn, and he'll continue to disrespect the UFC Champion until he gets a chance to prove his theories right in the cage. Still, Penn does have a very good skill set and a very well rounded fight game that Diaz knows he needs to contend with in this fight. What I'm wondering from comments like this is how he's going to perform against Penn. He's legitimately unhappy about having to fight Penn, so much so that there were rumblings he was going to back out of the fight just a few weeks ago. With having trained with Penn before and feeling the two were friends, how will that affect how Diaz approaches the fight? That's going to be one of the intriguing storylines that plays out in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

Sonnen threatens to turn up the heat on Silva; ?Spider?s? manager says Chael is either crazy or stupid

Chael Sonnen is still waiting and he's beginning to lose his patience.

On Saturday, the middleweight title challenger sent out a cryptic tweet directed at UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva basically saying accept the fight or beware.

Silva's manager Ed Soares appeared with the folks on HDNet's "Inside MMA" and hasn't changed his stance on giving Sonnen a second shot.

"I think Chael's delusional," Soares said of Sonnen's claim that he's the real champ and that the loss at UFC 117 was less than legitimate. "At the end of the day, he tapped, he quit, he gave up. Take a number and get to the back of the line. You had your opportunity."

Soares said Silva had little reaction to Sonnen's challenge in the Octagon at UFC 136.

"He just thinks the guy's crazy. He's just thinks the guy is a lunatic. It doesn't really affect him too much," said Soares.

Silva did tell Soares that Sonnen's shots at his wife were disrespectful.

HDNet's Bas Rutten seemed to agree with Soares' back of the line comment (2:50 mark). Who's in this imaginary line and who does Sonnen need to beat to earn the next shot? It's hard to name anyone else in the division currently who deserves the shot more than Sonnen.

Streaking Donald Cerrone Willing to Drop Weight to Face Nam Phan at 145

LAS VEGAS -- Just days away from a possible sixth straight win, Donald Cerrone is embodying the true spirit of a gambling town, with his eyes already turned on lucky seven.

But it's not what you might expect. Cerrone isn't thinking about asking for a lightweight title shot or even to face one of the division's top contenders. Instead, he says after UFC 137, he wants to shed a few more pounds to drop to featherweight and face Nam Phan.

If you're scratching your head at that one, Cerrone has a very specific reason, and it basically amounts to defending the honor of his camp.

Phan recently beat Cerrone's Team Greg Jackson stablemate and friend Leonard Garcia, and afterward, he made some comments that apparently rubbed Cerrone the wrong way.

"He said if our coaches were any good they'd teach Leonard to throw straight punches, but [he doesn't] know Leonard," he said. "You could teach him one thing, but as soon as he gets hit, he turns into that wild caveman and that's just how he fights. Nam just wants to talk s---. So I'll show him what our training looks like, 100 percent."

As post-fight comments go, Phan's sounded fairly innocuous, but Cerrone insists he's genuinely ticked off, and he's willing to go to extreme lengths to get the fight.

In fact, Cerrone -- who has a big fight against Dennis Siver on Saturday -- mentioned just how much of a sacrifice he would have to make in order to get down to the division's limit of 145 pounds.

"Lifestyle change, 100 percent," he said. "I eat a lot of candy, I can't survive without candy. Milk-Duds and Hot Tamales are what I love. It's going to be a lifestyle change. I'm going to have to hire a nutritionist and I'm going to have to be really strict, and I'm going to have to have my friends there to die because I'm going to die. When I was in Houston I was almost 180. It's going to be a lifestyle change. I'm going to have to start walking around at 160-165 and just keep dieting. I'm going to make it. I will make it. The give me that money, I will make it."

Cerrone, who once had a memorable feud with Jamie Varner, seems to find rivalries in the strangest places. He acknowledged that it's those thoughts that keep him motivated to train, and that he found the challenge of competing in two weight classes intriguing.

"Why couldn't I do them both?" he said. "They're going to say you're 145, you can't do 155? Whoa. Stop, no way. BJ Penn did it. Why can't I do it? Why can't I go to 145 and let Nam Phan know."

Even though Penn has gone back and forth between weight classes in his career, he has had long shifts at each weight. Cerrone would be attempting to go back and forth for specific fights, something that's never been done before. Apparently, he has no concerns about how the process of continually bulking up and then slimming down will have on his body. True to his "Cowboy" roots, he'll fire off his guns and let the bullets land where they may.

"I don't know, I don't care," he said. "I'm sure going out and getting drunk hurts me too, but I'm going to do that also."
