RJ Says: Give me a break in between supercross and motocross
Is the combined supercross / motocross season of today's era too long?
As a former supercross and motocross racer, I don't think the season is too long. Racers want to race.
But I would like to see a couple of changes that I think will make it better for the riders, teams, and most importantly, the fans.
First, I'd like to see a much longer break in between the end of the Supercross season, and the start of the MX season.
I think it would be great if the riders could have at least a couple off weekends off after the supercross season ends. One of the reasons is they could do more 'outdoor' testing at that time, instead of during supercross season.

Matt Mitrione Not Satisfied With Win, but Would Love Shot at Tito Ortiz
Matt Mitrione may be a little conflicted about the type of opponent he'd like to fight next. But he's not at all conflicted about wanting one particular dream grudge match, even if it's not a highly realistic probability.Mitrione, who improved to 5-0 in his 18-month MMA career with a knockout of Christian Morecraft on Sunday at UFC on Versus 4, told host Ariel Helwani on Tuesday's edition of "The MMA Hour" that he would love a chance to fight Tito Ortiz, with whom he has a newly born beef.
Ortiz fights Ryan Bader on Saturday at UFC 132, and UFC president Dana White said in January that if the former light heavyweight champion loses his next fight, he is likely to be cut from the UFC. Mitrione predicted a win for Bader and a pink slip for Ortiz shortly afterward.
"I say Bader (wins) by sending that giant planet of (Ortiz's) head straight into the atmosphere," Mitrione said before launching into a short diatribe at Ortiz. "I'm so glad that d-----bag spent all that money sponsoring Christian Morecraft and then lost again. Just like your pride was lost, the person representing your company lost.
"You're gonna lose again and get cut from the UFC. If for some reason you don't get cut from the UFC, I already talked to (Joe) Silva. I would love to fight you. I'll fight you at a catch weight. I will pull myself back to Ethiopian standards from back in the day and be as thin as possible, and I will punch you in that planet-sized dome of yours and send you packing finally and for good. Mr. Jameson, that was directed toward you."
Mitrione came under fire from Ortiz for comments he made on his "Mitrione Minute" segment on "The MMA Hour," and elsewhere, that were critical of Ortiz and his wife, former adult entertainment actress Jenna Jameson. The two exchanged words in a now-famous moment caught on video by Roy Nelson at the UFC's Fighter Summit in Las Vegas.
Ortiz co-hosted "Inside MMA" on HDNet earlier this month and said Mitrione crossed the line by bringing up his family.
"You don't talk about another man's woman," Ortiz said on the show. "This guy was a d-----bag by saying what he said and then he tried to come up and kiss my butt, shake my hand. I never met the guy. I don't know who the guy is. ... And then he goes on to say he will cut weight to fight me. Come on dude, what fight? ... Respect the fighters that paved the way for you to be here. I have been doing this for 14 years."
Mitrione is a heavyweight who weighed in at 261 pounds for his fight on Sunday; Ortiz fights at light heavyweight. Ortiz has not won a fight since a TKO win over Ken Shamrock in October 2006. Since then, he has four losses and a draw. His UFC 121 loss to Matt Hamill last October was the only won that didn't come against a champion, former champion or future champion.
Though a fight against Ortiz may be just a daydream scenario right now, Mitrione isn't certain where he fits in the UFC's heavyweight landscape. Four of his five UFC wins have come by knockout or TKO, and the fifth was a Fight of the Night performance against Joey Beltran in his home city of Indianapolis last September. But Mitrione believes his win over Morecraft on Sunday was not up to snuff.
"To be totally honest, I think this was probably my worst fight next to (my debut win over) Marcus Jones," Mitrione said. "I made so many mistakes. I got taken down on a horrible double. I didn't defend my wall takedowns at all. I'm glad my striking hands are heavy. He ended up brawling with me, which I didn't expect him to do. His hand positioning threw me off a little bit. I was doing so many different styles of jabs against him, because I was trying to figure out what was going to land against him."
Mitrione said he believes he still has work to do to improve - and he spent much of his training camp for Morecraft training at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas and said he plans to return there. But if he were matched up against a veteran, he isn't sure how he would fare if his performance was on par with how he judged himself Sunday in Pittsburgh.
"I want to fight a top guy," Mitrione said. "I like and respect Frank Mir. He and I are cool, and I think it would be a really fun fight. (But) I made so many mistakes (Sunday). I wonder if anyone else who fights feels the way I do after they fight. If I would have made those mistakes against Cheick Kongo or Frank Mir, I would've lost. It makes me wonder what the right step is next. My hands, I can scrap with anybody. Technique wise, ehh ..."
But one thing Mitrione said he is sure of, other than wanting that dream fight with Ortiz, is that he puts plenty of pressure on himself to be better each time out.
"The only way to be perfect is to expect it of yourself," Mitrione said. "I feel like there's a level of professionalism I owe to the fans, and they should see the best me possible."

?The War Master? Barnett and Overeem admit their fights weren?t exciting
Tournaments are tremendous, but the one downside may be the fighters trying manage fights a little too much. Alistair Overeem and Josh Barnett admitted to fighting smart fights, but not very exciting.
Overeem didn't want to take any risks on the ground against Fabricio Werdum. In the video below, he apologizes for the pace of the fight. Barnett admitted there was a methodology behind his mount without many strikes against Brett Rogers.
"We emphasis a lot with hip pressure and taking the wind out of people. My mount, the drive from my hips was really killing his wind," Barnett told Showtime. "While not super exciting to watch, ultimately [it was] very beneficial to me. It was a matter of setting things up."
Barnett faces a more experienced mixed martial artist in the semifinals. Sergei Kharitonov is 18-4 and has been in there with guys like Semmy Schilt, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Pedro Rizzo. He's also 1-1 against Overeem.
"Better all around fighter, sharp boxing and good kickboxing. [He's] very tough, granite chin and better ground game, but I know I have the tools to beat him as well. It's just going to be a different look," said Barnett.
The 33-year-old Barnett also revealed that he's no longer "The "Baby-Faced Assassin." He's now "The War Master."

Donald Cerrone in for John Makdessi, Faces Paul Taylor at UFC in Milwaukee

Donald Cerrone's 2011 will continue to stay busy. "Cowboy" will step in for an injured John Makdessi to fight Paul Taylor at UFC on Versus 5 in August in Milwaukee. The UFC announced Monday night that Makdessi had pulled out of the fight with Taylor, of England, due to an injury. And Cerrone, already 2-0 this year and fresh off a unanimous decision win over Vagner Rocha at UFC 131 just over two weeks ago, will step in.
The fight could prove to be a standup battle - both fighters are renowned kickboxers. But Cerrone has 80 percent of his career victories by submission.
Cerrone (15-3, 1 NC, 2-0 UFC), one of the WEC's standout and most popular fighters before the merger with the UFC, went 6-3 with one no contest as a lightweight in that promotion. His three losses all came with the WEC lightweight title on the line - once in a controversial split decision loss to Jamie Varner, and twice to Ben Henderson.
Cerrone, a Greg Jackson-trained fighter, won five Fight of the Night bonuses in the WEC and started his UFC career with a submission win over Paul Kelly that also won a Fight of the Night award at UFC 126 in February. That win gave Cerrone four straight.
Taylor (11-6-1, 1 NC, 4-5 UFC) is coming off a head kick knockout of Gabe Ruediger at UFC 126, which snapped a two-fight skid that saw him drop decisions to Sam Stout and John Hathaway.
Taylor has been with the UFC since UFC 70 in April 2007, a win over Edilberto de Oliveira. After that TKO victory, Taylor won Fight of the Night bonuses in three of his next four fights - though all three of those came in losses to renowned bonus hounds Chris Lytle and Marcus Davis, and one to fellow Englishman Paul Kelly.
UFC on Versus 5 will be the promotion's debut in Wisconsin after MMA sanctioning was passed there recently. The show will take place at the Bradley Center, home to the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks.
The card will feature a main event between Lytle and former welterweight title challenger Dan Hardy, who has lost three straight. The show also will feature a lightweight bout between Jim Miller and Henderson - with Miller looking for his eighth straight victory and a likely title shot if he gets past the former WEC lightweight champ.

Tito?s career is on the line, who?s giving him a shot against Bader?
The chips are stacked against Tito Ortiz. Last week, the 36-year-old former UFC light heavyweight champ revealed that he had to beg Zuffa management for one more shot after his loss to Matt Hamill at UFC 121 in October.
The UFC relented but didn't give him an easy mark. Up next is 28-year-old, top 10 light heavyweight Ryan Bader. Essentially a younger, more complete version of Tito.
On this week's MMA Insiders show, HDNet analyst Frank Trigg and Yahoo! Sports' Kevin joined ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas to talk about Ortiz's chances in the fight and what he'll do if he loses.

The exodus of top talent from World Victory Road's Sengoku promotion in Japan continues, as the UFC announced on Saturday via Twitter that highly ranked Japanese featherweight Hatsu Hioki has signed with the promotion.
"FYI ? guard-smashing savant Hatsu Hioki, a top-ranked featherweight, has been signed to the UFC roster," officials wrote. "Welcome!"
Much like his middleweight counterpart Jorge Santiago, Hioki has left his Sengoku belt in Japan to make the move to the UFC. He is 12-1-1 over his last 14 fights, with the sole loss coming by split decision to Michihiro Omigawa in 2009. His career record stands at 24-4-2, and he's only ever been defeated by decision, with three coming by split decision.
Hioki holds wins over a number of notables, including Marlon Sandro, Ronnie Mann, Rumina Sato, and a pair of wins over April's UFC Featherweight Title challenger Mark Hominick.
Penick's Analysis: Though the featherweight division has yet to be entirely fleshed out, the UFC essentially holds all of the top talent in that weight class as well. Sandro and Mann are both competing in Bellator tonight, but Hioki is THE top name in the division that hadn't been signed by the UFC. He's got a lot to prove and a big hill to climb to have success in North America, as other recently acquired fighters out of Japan haven't fared so well in the UFC thus far, but this is a very exciting signing and I can't wait to see how Hioki pans out in deeper waters here in North America.

PITTSBURGH -- In the aftermath of the UFC on Versus 4 bouts, bonuses were given out and fighters talked about their nights.
-- $50,000 bonuses were awarded to Charles Oliveira and Nik Lentz for Fight of the Night, Joe Lauzon for Submission of the Night, and Knockout of the Night to Cheick Kongo.
-- Brenneman, who had his original fight with T.J. Grant canceled, then stepped in at the last minute for Nate Marquardt, called the week surreal. He also said that he made weight so that he could get his show money. The waiting on if he would fight or not was hard, but he stayed calm about it.
"What can I do but sit there and wait for it to happen and be a professional?"
-- Rick Story was put in an odd position as his opponent changed. "I was prepared to fight a kickboxer with jiu-jitsu, not a shorter attacking wrestler. He got the better of me this time."
-- The attendance for the event was 7,792, and UFC president Dana White said that the UFC's first trip into Pittsburgh, "Didn't suck."
-- Matt Mitrione worked at Xtreme Couture with kickboxer Ray Sefo before this bout, particularly on the combination he used to knock Christian Morecraft out. He said the moment was just right to use the combination.
"I thought, what the hell, I might as well try it."
-- In Pat Barry's loss to Cheick Kongo, he came close to finishing off the man who eventually beat him. It appeared that referee Dan Miragliotta was going to stop the fight. Barry said that he did, for a split-second, think that the bout was going to be stopped, but that didn't stop him from attacking Kongo.

PENICK: 3 reasons to still watch UFC on Versus 4 after Nate Marquardt's removal

Nate Marquardt's removal from Sunday's UFC on Versus 4 event and subsequent firing from the UFC has been a shocking and entirely unexpected series of events on Saturday night. The loss of the main event for the card is a massive blow, but there are still a few reasons to tune in to the event on Versus from the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Penn.
Pat Barry vs. Cheick Kongo
It's a much poorer main event than the one scheduled, but I'm still excited to see this heavyweight fight between Barry and Kongo. There's a possibility it turns out to be a disappointment, but it could also be a very good matchup. Kongo's out to have a better performance than he did last October against Travis Browne, and Barry wants to prove that he's gotten better in all aspects since beginning work with Brock Lesnar's Death Clutch camp. It's certainly a lot less intriguing than the Marquardt-Story matchup, but it should be a good fight.
Rick Story
Rick Story is taking a risk in accepting the replacement fight against Charlie Brenneman. Considering he took the Marquardt fight on short notice and just fought last month, he's in a spot now where he's fighting an opponent a lot further down on the ladder in the division. If Story takes him out quickly and in impressive fashion then he won't lose any status, but he could be in for a difficult last minute fight, and if Brenneman pulls off the upset then Story will take a precipitous drop in stature. A loss to Marquardt wouldn't have brought him down a ton, but one to Brenneman will, so he's at a major risk. That risk makes this a very important fight for him, and watching him either rise to the occasion or fall short is worth tuning in for.
Preliminary card fights
Ok, so none of these are guaranteed to make the Versus broadcast, but it's worth tuning in to the Facebook stream to catch a number of the preliminary card fights tomorrow. The featherweight debuts of Tyson Griffin and Joe Stevenson are very intriguing, and actually the bout between Nik Lentz and Charles Oliveira could be a very good fight. The fact that Lentz has had a number of boring fights has people down on him, but Oliveira's the right type of opponent to pull out an excellent performance from him and it's a fight I want to see. Throw in Daniel Roberts and Joe Lauzon in fights where they both have a chance to be impressive, and there's a lot to see there.
Obviously this is an attempt to find some positives to a really negative situation, but even though the main event has been lost there is some redeeming value to the card here. It's certainly a much more skippable event than it would have been with Marquardt-Story still intact, but if you were going to tune in as it is, it's still worth checking out.

Pat Barry vs. Cheick Kongo
It's a much poorer main event than the one scheduled, but I'm still excited to see this heavyweight fight between Barry and Kongo. There's a possibility it turns out to be a disappointment, but it could also be a very good matchup. Kongo's out to have a better performance than he did last October against Travis Browne, and Barry wants to prove that he's gotten better in all aspects since beginning work with Brock Lesnar's Death Clutch camp. It's certainly a lot less intriguing than the Marquardt-Story matchup, but it should be a good fight.
Rick Story
Rick Story is taking a risk in accepting the replacement fight against Charlie Brenneman. Considering he took the Marquardt fight on short notice and just fought last month, he's in a spot now where he's fighting an opponent a lot further down on the ladder in the division. If Story takes him out quickly and in impressive fashion then he won't lose any status, but he could be in for a difficult last minute fight, and if Brenneman pulls off the upset then Story will take a precipitous drop in stature. A loss to Marquardt wouldn't have brought him down a ton, but one to Brenneman will, so he's at a major risk. That risk makes this a very important fight for him, and watching him either rise to the occasion or fall short is worth tuning in for.
Preliminary card fights
Ok, so none of these are guaranteed to make the Versus broadcast, but it's worth tuning in to the Facebook stream to catch a number of the preliminary card fights tomorrow. The featherweight debuts of Tyson Griffin and Joe Stevenson are very intriguing, and actually the bout between Nik Lentz and Charles Oliveira could be a very good fight. The fact that Lentz has had a number of boring fights has people down on him, but Oliveira's the right type of opponent to pull out an excellent performance from him and it's a fight I want to see. Throw in Daniel Roberts and Joe Lauzon in fights where they both have a chance to be impressive, and there's a lot to see there.
Obviously this is an attempt to find some positives to a really negative situation, but even though the main event has been lost there is some redeeming value to the card here. It's certainly a much more skippable event than it would have been with Marquardt-Story still intact, but if you were going to tune in as it is, it's still worth checking out.

Strikeforce’s Three Stars: Masvidal, Barnett and Cormier
The latest installment of Strikeforce's heavyweight grand prix delivered a bizarre night of fights that featured a no decision, a submission due to strikes, and a weird main event where neither fighter showed off his best work. But who did stand out?
No. 1 star -- Jorge Masvidal: As the non-heavyweights on the main card, Masvidal and K.J Noons had the tall order of showing what the little guys can do. Masvidal lived up to expectations, putting on a show with K.J. Noons' face on the unfortunate receiving end. A kick to the neck leveled Noons near the end of the first round, and Masvidal never looked back. Now, he wants a shot at Gilbert Melendez and the Strikeforce lightweight title.
No. 2 star -- Josh Barnett: After not fighting for nearly a year, Barnett had no problem disposing of Brett Rogers. He used catch wrestling to control Rogers before locking up an arm-triangle choke, and then launched into a speech that showed why fans still love Barnett. Next, he'll face Sergei Kharitonov in the semifinals of the Strikeforce heavyweight GP.
No. 3 star -- Daniel Cormier: You would expect a two-time Olympic wrestler to control a fight with takedowns, but Cormier chose to show off how much his stand-up game has grown in the two years that he's been training in MMA. He stayed away from Jeff Monson's submission game, and stuck to a gameplan that involved peppering Monson with combinations. Cormier told Cagewriter that he would like a chance against Chad Griggs, who put on an impressive performance of his own against Valentijn Overeem, or Shane del Rosario.
Honorable mention -- K.J. Noons: On a night where Valentijn Overeem tapped out from a fight because of strikes, and Fabricio Werdum oddly refused to engage Alistair Overeem, Noons showed true heart in continuing to give his all in a losing effort to Masvidal.

Carano MIA and ‘Cyborg’ unsigned, how much longer will Zuffa-run Strikeforce stick with female fighting?
It's not looking good for female fighters with the biggest promotions. This week's Strikeforce Challengers card in Washington and next month's Strikeforce cards in Las Vegas and Chicago feature some female fights. After that, who knows?
The two biggest female names under the Strikeforce banner still don't have fights scheduled.
We're now a few weeks removed from Gina Carano bailing on her Strikeforce: Dallas fight and there's still official no word on what the injury was, or a timetable for her return. When Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker spoke with AOL, he still had no answers.
"Gina is feeling much better after having undergone some medical attention and is looking forward to getting back into training very soon. She would like to express thanks to Team Jackson for a wonderful training camp, Strikeforce and the fans," said Coker, reading from a text message he received from Carano's management team.
Beyond that the boss didn't have any details.
"She evidently had some medical attention provided and she looks forward to getting back soon. So that's everything I know," said Carano.
Coker couldn't even answer if the medical issue was career threatening, saying the text was all he's seen.
The situation with Strikeforce's No. 1 female star is just as unclear, or is it?
Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos is currently without a contract.
"Absolutely. I'm pretty sad not to be fighting and I'm trying to renegotiate my contract for a year, but Strikeforce doesn't want to made a deal, they want to keep paying me what they paid before, but now I'm the event's champion and I've never been defeated in Strikeforce. I just wanted to be recognized," Cyborg said.
She also told Tatame that she has taken an August fight in Brazil and just has to wait until her Strikeforce contract runs out this month.
One has to wonder if this is the end of the line for Cyborg in Strikeforce. If Dana White has zero interest in female fighting in the UFC, why would he allow a company that he owns to lock itself into any more long-term contracts with female fighters?

PENICK: UFC on Versus 4's Joe Stevenson and Tyson Griffin have opportunities for career renaissance at featherweight

The UFC's adoption of the featherweight and bantamweight divisions at the end of last year opened the door for a new beginning for a number of fighters stuck in the middle of the lightweight division.
By far the most packed division in the sport, the lightweight division has been home to many fighters in the UFC that would have been better suited at 145 lbs., and perhaps even lower than that. But with it being the lowest weight class in the UFC for a long time, the money was better and the opportunity was there.
Now that the opportunities are there at featherweight, we've already seen the beginnings of an exodus of lightweight fighters to the lower classes. Sundays UFC on Versus 4 card features two more looking to successfully make the drop to featherweight, as former lightweight contenders Tyson Griffin and Joe Stevenson take on Manvel Gamburyan and Javier Vasquez, respectively.
Griffin and Stevenson have each had extremely similar paths in the UFC that have led them to this point, and with each riding a three fight losing streak into their featherweight bouts this weekend, those paths will come to an end if they fail to pick up a win.
Stevenson made his organizational debut first, winning the title of The Ultimate Fighter in the second season's welterweight tournament, and made the drop to lightweight after a loss to Josh Neer in 2006. The UFC had just brought back the division after dropping it for several years, and Stevenson made himself a contender by posting four straight victories at 155 lbs.
Posting three stoppages over Yves Edwards, Dokonjonosuke Mishima and Melvin Guillard, and then a decision win over Kurt Pellegrino, Stevenson was given a chance to fight for the UFC Lightweight Championship. Sean Sherk had been stripped of the title following a failed steroid test, so Stevenson met B.J. Penn for the belt at UFC 80.
The biggest opportunity of his life ended up marking the beginning of Stevenson's downfall in the division, which would continue over the next three years. He lost in brutal fashion to Penn, who made him bleed profusely before choking him out in the second round.
He bounced back six months later with a submission win over Gleison Tibau, but then dropped consecutive fights to Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez. Though he closed out 2009 strong, posting consecutive wins over Nate Diaz and Spencer Fisher, the last 16 months haven't been kind to him.
His move to the featherweight division was prompted by losses to George Sotiropoulos, Mac Danzig and Danny Castillo. The losses have simply piled up on Stevenson against fighters of a lower and lower profile, and he's hoping that by dropping a weight class his abilities will suit him better.
Griffin finds himself in the same boat. After a successful UFC debut in 2006, he suffered his first career loss in his next outing, against future UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar. He found some solace with a "Fight of the Night" bonus in that loss, and with his next two wins over Clay Guida and Thiago Tavares he'd take the "Fight of the Night" as well.
He added two more wins in 2008 before getting a shot at former Champion Sean Sherk, who at the time was looking to bounce back from a loss to B.J. Penn in their title fight at UFC 84 earlier that year. Griffin gave Sherk a tough fight, but ultimately lost for the second time.
Griffin got back on track with a win over Rafael Dos Anjos and his first knockout win in the UFC over Hermes Franca, but much like Stevenson, Griffin had a rough 2010.
Split decision losses to Evan Dunham and Nik Lentz sandwiched a vicious knockout loss to Takanori Gomi, and had Griffin nearing the end of his tenure with the UFC. Now he's returning to the division in which he started his career back in 2004, and in Manny Gamburyan he meets a fighter who has been where he is now.
Gamburyan dropped to featherweight after consecutive losses in the UFC, and made a run to a title shot in the division in the WEC. Stevenson's opponent Javier Vasquez as well is a former lightweight who has found a new home at 145 lbs., but he's been there for a while as well.
Sunday marks an opportunity for Griffin and Stevenson - who are both still in their twenties - to reinvent themselves as contenders in a new weight class. Both are still very young, and both have the experience of fighting against some of the best fighters in the world in the weight class they have left. If they can effectively make the weight cut to 145 lbs. and can translate their experience and skills to their new weight class, each can make their way up the ranks quickly.
Their time in the UFC doesn't have to come to an end this weekend, and their time as elite fighters doesn't need to be behind them. A new journey for each begins on Sunday night in Pittsburgh, Penn., and if they do what they are capable of doing, these longtime UFC veterans will keep themselves around for years to come.

PITTSBURGH - Onetime UFC middleweight title challenger Nate Marquardt had hoped to drop to the welterweight division.Instead, he's the one who's been dropped.
Less than one hour after the UFC officially announced that Marquardt has been scratched from Sunday's UFC on Versus 4 event, UFC president Dana White informed the world Marquardt also has been released from the organization.

Curran finishes Peruvian with Peruvian necktie; Sandro survives tough one at Bellator 46
Marlon Sandro was expected to be the guy producing a flashy finish instead it was the usually workmanlike Pat Curran who did during the back end of the Bellator featherweight tournament quarterfinals in Hollywood, Fla.
Sandro, a huge free agent signing for Bellator, had to go the distance with Genair da Silva Jr. to pull out a split decision win. Curran, back down at 145 after a lot of success at lightweight. finished Luis Palomino with a very uncommon submission, the Peruvian necktie at 3:49 of the first round.
Both fighters move into the tournament semifinals in July. Bellator announced that Sandro will face Nazareno Malegarie while Curran takes on Ronnie Mann. Also on that card is Bellator's featherweight champ Joe Warren, who'll battle the Season 4 tournament winner, Patricio "Pitbull" Freire at Bellator 47 in Rama, Canada.
Warren (7-1) hasn't fought at featherweight since he beat Joe Soto last September. The division has added so much talent and developed so quickly, Warren may not even be amongst the top five 145 pounders on the current Bellator roster.
Pat Curran (14-4) would certainly give the smallish Warren a run for his money. Curran was very competitive during his lightweight fights with Bellator. He upset Roger Huerta last May and began the former UFC star's demise. Then he went the distance with top six lightweight Eddie Alvarez.
Tonight in Florida, he looked awesome at featherweight. Possessing heavy hands, Curran dropped Palomino with a huge right, just over two minutes into the fight. A stunned Palomino tried to secure a takedown, but the scramble resulted in Curran eventually scoring his own along the cage and gaining top control.
With his cousin Jeff, a former WEC champ and jiu-jitsu black belt, in his corner, Curran began to show off his quickly improving submission. The 23-year-old worked a d'arce choke. When that wasn't working, he transitioned to highly unusual Peruvian necktie. The pressure of cranking back with hands, hips and legs made it impossible for Palomino to survive.

It wasn't as easy for Sandro, No. 5 in the USA Today/Bloody Elbow 145-pound rankings, against the fellow Brazilian da Silva.
The former Sengoku featherweight champ started strong. Just over two minutes into the fight, Sandro dropped da Silva with a nasty left. He jumped on top and pounded away, but the referee Jorge Alonso wisely let da Silva scramble his way out of trouble. Sandro, 34, tried a guillotine choke, but da Silva eventually got his head free.
In the second, Sandro (18-2) continued to land solid shots with front leg kicks and by getting off first with his hands. Da Silva tried to counterpunch, but was way too wild. The pace slowed in the third and da Silva landed his best punch of the fight, a right hand with 3:55 left. Da Silva tried two takedowns against a tiring Sandro and whiffed on both. Sandro made good on 1-of-2 down the stretch.
Cagewriter scored it 30-27 for Sandro, but the judges were split. The Florida trio scored it 30-27, 29-28 and 28-29 for Sandro.
The pressure's on Sandro, the highest-ranked fighter remaining in the field. Frankly, it looks like he might be a little overrated. His only losses are against new UFC signee Hatsu Hioki, and Michihiro Omigawa.
Omigawa was ripped off in a disputed decision at UFC 131, but he's been less than impressive in his second chance with the promotion.
We'll find out what Sandro has in North American fight No. 2. The Bellator semis should be explosive. This is an excellent group.

James Toney and Ken Shamrock reportedly agree to September MMA fight

Professional boxer James Toney will be fighting a late 40s UFC Hall of Famer in an MMA bout this year, according to a report from BJPenn.com.
No, this isn't a repeat story from 2010, the opponent in question is not Randy "The Natural" Couture and the fight will not be taking place in the UFC.
Instead, Toney has agreed to meet 47-year-old Ken Shamrock in his second MMA fight this September. The former boxing champion fought Couture at UFC 118 in his one and only UFC appearance, getting submitted in quick fashion in the first round. He said he would fight again in MMA, but the UFC wanted nothing more to do with him.
Enter Shamrock, who continues to fight on despite being well past a truly competitive level. A finalist in the first ever UFC event, Shamrock has competed in just about every possible era and promotion of the sport, but he's gone 2-7 in nine fights over the last six years.
There's no word on what promoter will be putting this fight on, but it's expected to come sometime in September.

Penick's Analysis: This is a complete freakshow/farcical fight, but if Toney's going to fight another MMA bout, this is about the type of opponent that makes sense. Shamrock's got a name, but he's well past being anywhere near a legitimate competitor. Still, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Shamrock take Toney down immediately and finish him quickly. Toney's not an MMA fighter, and he'll try to out-box Shamrock before that happens, but it's more than likely he's going to be taken down quickly and handled in the cage yet again.
