UFC 139 openers: Irked Castillo rolls over Bailey for first round TKO, Torres and Baczynski win too

UFC 139 openers: Irked Castillo rolls over Bailey for first round TKO, Torres and Baczynski win too

SAN JOSE - Apparently Danny Castillo felt disrespected when Shamar Bailey missed weight yesterday. After pounding on Bailey to produce a first TKO victory, Castillo had little to say except that his opponent bothered him with his weight issues.

"You're supposed to be a professional and come in three pounds overweight, and then tell me you can't lose anymore weight?" Castillo told UFC analyst Joe Rogan.

Bailey came in yesterday at 158 pounds and passed on trying to lose two pounds in the next hour. In the end, the extra weight made no difference as Castillo threw him around like a rag doll in fight No. 1 of UFC 139 at the HP Pavilion.

The northern California-native scored his first takedown just 15 seconds into the fight. Castillo (12-4, 2-1 UFC) landed a nasty body kick and fell to his rear end from the impact. Bailey charged forward to score his own takedown and got double-legged down to the mat. He got up quickly, but Castillo picked him up off the ground and slammed him down twice in the next 45 seconds. After the third takedown, Bailey never got back to his feet.

Castillo worked from half guard to smother and grind on Bailey. It wore out the Season 13 "Ultimate Fighter" alum. In the final 90 seconds of the round, Castillo began to sit up on a knee and punch away to the body and head. Bailey got tired of defending himself with 15 seconds left in the round as Castillo threw 11 unanswered shots. Bailey rolled to his side and covered up. Most of the shots were hitting Bailey on the arm, but it was clear he didn't want to continue at the 4:52 mark of the first.

"I feel great. It feels good when you fight to your potential. It's exciting for me and important for the advancement of my career. I think the lightweight division is the strongest in the UFC and it's good to get a win. It's what I wanted to do and I'm glad I went out there and did it," said Castillo.

Bailey, who is now 1-2 in the UFC, admitted he blew it this weekend.

"I'm very disappointed in myself, definitely underperformed. I've never come in overweight, so it was definitely a bad start with that. Then Danny went out and fought a good fight. I wish the ref hadn't stopped the fight but what are you going to do. I need to do what I do, but way better," said Bailey (12-5).

Torres workman-like in getting back on winning track

Miguel Torres isn't the same fighter he was in the WEC, but that doesn't mean he's doing anything wrong.

Now that the weight class is quickly filling up with dangerous opponents, the former bantamweight king is simply using a more measured approach. Torres worked the clinch effectively and wore down Nick Pace to pick up his first win since February via unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three scorecards.

"I'm a little disappointed with my performance, I wanted to knock him out or submit him. I knew he was looking for a good shot. I could tell by the way he was standing. I didn't want to rush it, so I was trying to be smart," Torres (39-4, 2-1 UFC) said. "I've been working on my wrestling a lot. So I was trying a couple takedowns and get up and put the pressure on him. I felt him in the clench and he was kind of weak, so I was able to finish it."

UFC 139 openers: Irked Castillo rolls over Bailey for first round TKO, Torres and Baczynski win too

Baczynski pulls the upset in rather easy fashion over Brown

Matt Brown's been around the block a time or two, but the veteran does tend to have lapses in concentration. It happened tonight and Seth Baczysnki was the beneficiary.

Baczysnki, a cast member on Season 11 of "The Ultimate Fighter," slapped on a tight guillotine choke early in the second. Brown tried to free himself, but after 24 seconds he couldn't hold out any longer and tapped at 0:42.

"I'm just really pleased to get out of there with the finish. It's my 15th professional win andI'm happy to close the win out against a tough opponent," Baczynski said. "I'm going to get to enjoy Thanksgiving with my family this year and be thankful for my success."

Brown (12-11, 5-5 UFC) didn't look right from the start. He was tentative in the striking game and often pushed around in the clinch in the opening five minutes.

Baczynski (15-6, 2-1 UFC) came out looking to throw in the second. He missed with a big shot that Brown ducked under. Brown pushed forward to score takedown, but left his head exposed. It was a pretty easy submission attempt for Baczysnki.

Brown was a minus-135 betting favorite.

Despite loss of 'The Coach,' Hominick prepping for vintage form at UFC 140

Mark Hominick knows the storyline that will accompany his first trip to the octagon since his unsuccessful bid for Jose Aldo's featherweight crown.

People will wonder whether his head is still in the game after the loss to Aldo followed by the bigger loss of his longtime coach and mentor Shawn Tompkins.

"There's a lot of what-ifs, and I'm looking to silence any critics that are out there and make a performance that people look back and say in my division, 'I don't want to fight that guy,'" Hominick today told MMAjunkie.com Radio.

I was invited to the 2nd Annual DC Moto TF Ride Day and Invitational Poker Tournament at Pala Raceway. It was a full day's 'work' for the DC Athletes; group photos, action shots, interviews, and lots of MX riding at Pala. And there was good game of Poker to raise money for Road 2 Recovery. The list of Athletes sponsored by the DC Shoes brand is a very impressive group making this Supercross assignment unique fun for me!

Strikeforce Champ Luke Rockhold expecting to face Tim Kennedy in January

The future of Strikeforce as a promotion is still in limbo as everyone awaits the decision of Showtime and new owners Zuffa on whether their television deal will continue on. However, they've still got a couple of months left for sure, and the Champions remaining in the organization may all defend their titles at least once more. The December 17 card features a Lightweight title bout between Gilbert Melendez and Jorge Santiago, as well as women's champ Cris Cyborg in action. Now, newly crowned Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold has told Tatame.com that expects to defend the belt in January:

"I think Tim Kennedy is out there, and from what I've been told, that's probably my next fight. Nothing's official, but they told me to get into train camp and get ready. So, I'm thinking January I'll be fighting and, most probably, it'll be Tim Kennedy... I also heard that Strikeforce might survive. Like I said, nothing's official, it's all hearsay. I look forward going to the UFC. I think me, Kennedy and Jacare would be very well in the UFC. I think we're on the way to go."

Alistair Overeem wants the biggest fights in the UFC, starting with Brock Lesnar

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Alistair_Overeem_180_4.jpg
Alistair Overeem makes his UFC debut in December in an excellent heavyweight fight with former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 141. The Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion and K-1 Grand Prix kickboxing champion has emerged over the last couple of years as a rising force in the division, so much so that he could have entered the UFC with a title fight immediately.

"I didn't need to fight Lesnar," Overeem wrote in a blog at Yahoo! Sports. "When I signed for the UFC, Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta offered me the winner of the title fight between Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez. But I am a fighter. I don't want to sit on the sidelines, I want to fight."

"I think I have earned a UFC world title fight, by winning every major title outside the UFC, but I am here to prove that I am ? without question ? the best heavyweight on the planet. You don't do that sitting on the sidelines or working out in the gym, you do that by fighting and beating the best available opposition in the biggest fights that can be made."

"Myself vs. Lesnar is a huge fight and I jumped at the chance to fight him."

Many don't see Lesnar as a threat in the division anymore after a battle with diverticulitis and a less than ideal reaction to getting hit in his last several fights. But while Overeem himself is very confident in what he's going to do against Lesnar, he knows Lesnar is not to be taken lightly.

"But I don't underestimate this man," Overeem said. "Winning UFC belt from Randy Couture in his fourth pro MMA fight and defending it against Frank Mir and Shane Carwin was very impressive. I am also impressed by Lesnar's fighting spirit; he has twice come back from a very serious illness and fought very tough opposition right away."

"He obviously has a lot of confidence in himself in fighting me after more than a year out and surgery on his stomach, and I admire that about him, but I am even more confident in myself. I will knock this guy out. He is great at takedowns and controlling people on the ground, but I can stop his takedowns and he is no match for me on the feet."

"I am going to rip Brock Lesnar apart, piece by piece."

Penick's Analysis: Overeem wanting to stay active and taking what is, despite the thoughts of some people, a very tough challenge in Lesnar is admirable. When he could have gotten the immediate title shot, he's not taking an easy route with this fight, and even though he thinks he's going to "rip Lesnar apart," he's got a difficult fight here. Taking on that challenge and truly setting out to prove himself as the best is going to be the best way to introduce himself to the UFC audience.

RJ Says: Supercross 2011

Rick Johnson is a seven time AMA Motocross and Supercross Champion. These are his thoughts on the upcoming 2011 AMA / FIM Supercross Series.

Depending on how healthy riders stay during the season, Supercross 2011 could be an incredibly awesome year.

Of course, we all say that every year, but this year could be something special - if most stay healthy.

As I go down a list of riders, my top pick is defending AMA Supercross Champion Ryan Dungey.

Do I think Ryan will dominate Supercross the way he did outdoor MX in 2010? No, but after watching Ryan over the past few years, and especially at the MX of Nations in Italy in 2009, I've seen his confidence go up and up. Each time out, he gets a little faster, a little stronger, and smarter.

Quinton Jackson is headed back to Japan.

After campaigning for a spot on the UFC 144 card immediately after his loss to Jon Jones in September, the UFC has granted Jackson's wish of fighting in the Land of the Rising Sun. Jackson (32-9) has agreed to meet Ryan Bader (13-2) on the Feb. 26 card at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta confirmed the news with ESPN.com on Thursday.

Amazingly, when Jackson meets Bader at UFC 144, it will mark exactly six years since his last fight in Japan. On Feb. 26, 2006, "Rampage" defeated Yoon Dong-Sik via unanimous decision at PRIDE 31. In total, the former PRIDE star competed in 20 MMA/kickboxing fights in Japan.

The 33-year-old Jackson is 2-2 in his last four fights. He had won two in a row before losing to Jones in a UFC light heavyweight title fight at UFC 135.

Bader, 28, snapped his two-fight losing streak last weekend at UFC 139 when he knocked out Jason Brilz in the first round. Prior to that win, Bader had lost to Jon Jones and Tito Ortiz in 2011.

UFC 144 will mark the organization's first event in Japan since Dec. 2000. The main event will feature Frankie Edgar vs. Ben Henderson for the UFC lightweight title.

Bonnar comes clean with Koscheck after UFC 139 win

Bonnar comes clean with Koscheck after UFC 139 winAfter winning a decision over Kyle Kingsbury at UFC 139, Stephan Bonnar was honest about a legal matter with a fellow fighter. After the win, he spoke with UFC commentator Joe Rogan and apologized toUFC welterweightJosh Koscheck.

"I have a little confession to make. I had this big plan to get this win, and then call out Koscheck. But you know what? Something about fighting makes you be honest with yourself. The truth is, he asked me not to make those shirts, and I did it anyway. So Koscheck, I apologize. You taught me a valuable lesson. From now on, fighters gotta approve of those shirts, and they'll get paid for every one of them."

Bonnar had a brewing feud with Koscheck. Though the two were castmates on the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter," they had recently fallen out when Bonnar's clothing company printed a parody t-shirt of Koscheck.

Based off the 1980s trading cards "Garbage Pail Kids," Bonnar's shirt depicted Koscheck as a Cabbage Patch Kid. The problem was that Bonnar didn't get permission from Koscheck to use his image. Koscheck sued, and Bonnar responded by challenging the much-smaller Koscheck to a fight.

"Words cannot describe how bad I want to kick Josh Koscheck's [expletive] right now," Bonnar said in June. "Sometimes I can't sleep at night because I'm up just thinking about all the things I want to do to him ? and kick his [expletive]."

But Bonnar has put those feelings behind him. Getting permission and paying fighters for their images is the right thing to do. It's just surprising to see Koscheck, who is usually considered a "bad guy" in MMA, teach that lesson to Bonnar, a beloved fighter.

RJ Says: Give me a break in between supercross and motocross

Is the combined supercross / motocross season of today's era too long?

As a former supercross and motocross racer, I don't think the season is too long. Racers want to race.

But I would like to see a couple of changes that I think will make it better for the riders, teams, and most importantly, the fans.

First, I'd like to see a much longer break in between the end of the Supercross season, and the start of the MX season.

I think it would be great if the riders could have at least a couple off weekends off after the supercross season ends. One of the reasons is they could do more 'outdoor' testing at that time, instead of during supercross season.

Strikeforce heavyweight Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva undergoes shoulder surgery

Strikeforce heavyweight Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva underwent shoulder surgery today to repair an injury suffered in his loss to Daniel Cormier in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix semifinals in September, according to a report from Tatame.com.

His manager, Alex Davis, said he'd be able to return to training in six weeks, and he added hope that Silva would be brought to the UFC.

Said Davis: "I hope that, meanwhile, Strikeforce decides its future and that Bigfoot can come with all his power to the UFC."

WWE SmackDown! Taping Draws 1,600 Paying Customers

Last Tuesday’s SmackDown! taping in Toledo, Ohio was one of the worst attended WWE events in years as it drew 3,200 fans, with only 1,600 paid.
Following the event’s poor advance, WWE only sold tickets facing the camera so the Huntington Center would appear full on television. SLAM! Wrestling columnist Matt Bishop, who attended the event, described the venue’s appearance: “Tuesday’s tapings of WWE Smackdown, Superstars and NXT wasn’t notable because of what happened in the ring, but rather because of what was happening outside the ringside area. Or more appropriately, ...

UFC on Fox draws 5.7 million, Bob Arum says MMA got ?buried?

UFC on Fox draws 5.7 million, Bob Arum says MMA got ?buried?

Even with the quick knockout at UFC on Fox 1, the event pulled in a very big audience for the promotion's debut on network television.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the show beat college football and produced an audience of near six million.

[...] preliminary ratings announced by Fox show the Ultimate Fighting Championship card on the network Saturday night was watched by 5.7 million people. A release issued by the network indicated the broadcast, the first for the UFC on network television, pulled a 4.3 rating in the 18-to-34 male demographic, better than any Saturday night college football game this season except the Alabama-Louisiana State game on Nov. 5.

Amongst local affiliates, no surprise here, Las Vegas did the biggest numbers:

KVVU-Fox 5 drew the highest rating of all Fox affiliates, according to the station.

It was a big night for fighting in general. The UFC's network TV debut was more than solid, while boxing's Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez fight was deemed a big success as well.

During the prefight, UFC president Dana White worked to shatter the image that the sports were in competition. Following the fight, boxing promoter Bob Arum was still in combative mode.

"They thought they would hurt us. Instead they got hurt because they got buried. But I think the fact they're just on for an hour helps us," Arum told the N.Y. Post.

Arum said boxing's momentum isn't about just one fight. His next big tilt comes in three weeks with the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito rematch in New York on Dec. 3.

"We had so many companies soliciting us wanting to be sponsors not just for a fight, but a series of fights," Arum said. "We've had to greatly increase our staff and personnel. Our [Las Vegas] offices are now too small, and we're in the process of buying our own building, so we can expand and handle the people we have."

Can boxing and MMA both benefit from the attention it got this weekend or can only one prosper?
