Motocross of Nations 2011: Saturday's MX action and qualifying
Saturday's Qualifying at the 2011 MX of Nations in France. The Motocross of Nations at St. Jean d'Angely, France is the most prestigious MX race of the year. In today's Qualifying Races it was the Americans: Ryan Dungey (MX1 class), Blake Bagget (MX2 class), and Ryan Villopoto (Open class) all led every lap of their respective motos. USA dominated in an almost unbelievable fashion, thus scoring 2 points for the day.
The Italian team surprised everyone with a second best overall for the day and scoring 4 points. Italy's Antonio Cairoli gave Ryan Dungey everything he could handle in the MX1 qualifier, finishing 2nd on the day behind Team USA's captain. The host country's Team France, finished third overall for the day, with Chrisophe Pourcel finishing 3rd in MX1, Marvin Musquin 2nd in MX2 and Gautier Paulin 3rd in the Open class. They received 6 points on the day. France is one of the favorites to end USA's reign as MXoN Champions.
Each member of Team USA gets the Lovemytime Holeshot Award for winning their respective motos
Roger De Coster said, "We have two riders with experience, and we expected to be on top. I was impressed with Antonio Cairoli, he put some pressure on Dungey, and rode great in some sections of the track. What this guy (Blake) did is amazing. It's difficult to come race the first time in Europe. The French team rode good today, and the Italians were even better than I expected. Of course Cairoli will do well, but I was very impressed with the other Italian riders. Remember though, today is only Qualifying. Tomorrow is what counts. We should not be over-confident"

Strikeforce Challengers 19 upset: Former LSU FB Jordan shocks Johnson
As the big-time athletes continue to filter into mixed martial arts, some veterans getting wake up calls. Lavar Johnson got his in the first 30 seconds of the fight from former LSU fullback Shawn Jordan. A monstrous left blasted him around his right eye, he pawed at it and knew he was in for a dogfight.
The 26-year-old Jordan (12-3) surprised the hard-hitting Johnson with his chin, wrestling and power to pull the upset via stoppage (key lock) at 3:08 of the second round. Johnson, who was part of the alternate bouts in the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix, was a minus-270 favorite entering tonight's tilt.
Jordan was a member of the 2007 national championship team at LSU. It looks like he's got a bright future in MMA.
"[Fighting] is an entirely separate entity. It's great. I love it," Jordan said when asked to compare MMA to football. "It's a different type of competition, just me."
He's an athletic 5-foot-11 and 248 pounds. Seconds after a rough fight, he pulled off two successful standing back flips to celebrate the victory. Jordan was a big-time high school recruit out of El Paso, Tx. back in 2003. The No. 7 rated fullback in the country, he turned down Stanford, UCLA and Oklahoma State to go play for Nick Saban.
Johnson, also former college football player, is massive but Jordan walked right through the knockout artist's shots and dumped him like a sack of potatoes when they locked up.
On the ground, Jordan was heavy and wore Johnson down. By the middle of the second, Johnson (15-5) was struggling with badly with a swelled right eye and didn't pay attention to his right arm. Jordan grabbed it, got into position and pushed forward with all his weight. Johnson had to tap before his shoulder was shredded.
As the ring announcer shouted the results, you could hear Johnson tell Jordan that he never expected that early left hook that changed the fight. He said he was looking for the right from the southpaw.
Jordan, now working with Greg Jackson's MMA gym in Albuquerque needs to work on his standup, but he's definitely got a granite chin. Johnson drilled him with a left and an uppercut to start the second and Jordan just smiled. Johnson has 13 KO's victories in 21 fights.

Dan Henderson Wanted Anderson Silva Rematch, 'But Evidently He Hurt Himself'

For the first time in a little over two years, Dan Henderson is a UFC fighter again. Judging by his gentle ribbing of UFC president Dana White during Tuesday's UFC 139 press conference in San Jose, not too much has changed about his relationship with his boss."I guess it's a little bit ironic that every time I win a title somewhere Dana has to buy the company to get me back," Henderson joked before adding that he was glad to be back since "the best match-ups for me are here in the UFC."
As for White, who's traded verbal barbs with Henderson before, during, and after contentious contract negotiations in the past, he seems eager to let bygones be bygones. Especially now that Henderson is back in the fold and headlining UFC 139 against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.
"Dan and I get along just fine," said White. "We butt heads here and there, but we get along great. I respect him as a fighter. He's a durable, tough guy who's been out there beating the best in the world. I can't hate him for knocking Fedor [Emelianenko] out either, so...I'm happy to have him back."
Henderson gives up his Strikeforce light heavyweight title to return to the UFC for the first time since his knockout victory over Michael Bisping at UFC 100. After beating "Feijao" Cavalcante for the Strikeforce belt and then knocking out Emelianenko in a non-title affair, Henderson said, he "wasn't excited about anybody coming up that I might be fighting other than the guys that were going to be in the UFC."
One fight he is excited about, it seems, is a rematch with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
"There's only one fight that I'd probably fight at 185 [pounds] and he won't fight right now, I guess," Henderson said in reference to Silva, adding that the champion "said he's hurt."
"Everybody could speculate, and I'd be one of those same people, but that's the fight that we originally talked about," Henderson said. "But evidently he hurt himself."
Sensing perhaps that Henderson wasn't totally sold on the injury story, White stepped in to back up his champion, insisting that Silva was suffering from a shoulder injury after his win over Yushin Okami at UFC 134 and had been told by his doctor to take eight weeks off.
"Listen, Anderson Silva's fought everybody," White said. "It's not like he's ducking fights. He's never ducked a fight and when he's ready, and if this thing goes right, and if Dan wants to cut that weight, then we can talk about Anderson Silva."
Of course, to even make it a conversation worth having the 41-year-old Henderson first has to get past Rua on November 19. Even if he does, and if he continues to lobby for a rematch with Silva, the UFC might rightfully wonder whether Henderson will be sufficiently interested in sticking around at middleweight should he win the title.
After all, there's not much benefit to giving a guy at shot at the 185-pound strap if, by his own admission, he's "not fond of cutting weight anymore." At least that's something he won't have to worry about for the next couple of months. The fight with Rua may not require him to drop too many pounds, but it will take just about everything he's got if he wants to come out on top.

UFC 139 Bout a Dream Come True for Cung Le, but Last Stand for Wanderlei Silva

Cung Le isn't the only fighter to find out the hard way that acting and professional fighting don't always mix, especially when done in the wrong order, but at least he used it as a learning experience, he said at Tuesday's UFC 139 press conference."I actually learned my lesson the first time when I came back against Scott Smith," Le said. "I wasn't very busy training when I was on the movie set. I was just more focused on getting into character."
He started off well enough against Smith in their first meeting in December of 2009. But his lack of training caught up to him in the final round, and Smith came out of nowhere to score the upset via knockout of a fading, winded Le.
When they signed on to face each other in a rematch some seven months later, he had every opportunity to make the same mistake. Fortunately for Le, experience -- particularly the painful kind - is an excellent teacher.
"I was doing some film work, [but] I made sure I trained every day and I stayed in shape," he said, adding that this time around, as he prepares to face Wanderlei Silva at UFC 139 in San Jose, Calif., he's been in the gym since February.
"I am focused on this fight, so right now it's all about being an MMA fighter," said Le.
For Silva, who stepped in as a replacement for the injured Vitor Belfort, the stakes are even higher. UFC president Dana White has made it clear that he thinks Silva might need to hang up the gloves after his knockout loss to Chris Leben at UFC 132, and this could be the Brazilian's last chance to prove to his boss that he still has some fight left in him.
"I love fighting. I love the sport. I grew up inside the ring, inside the Octagon. I want to fight as long as I can," Silva told reporters.
When asked if he felt that his back was against the wall in the fight with Le, he didn't argue. "Some guys fight better in that position. I'm thinking I am one of [those] guys," he said.
Le, a decorated Sanshou kickboxer who turned to MMA relatively late in life and fought the entirety of his four-year career in Strikeforce up until this point, said he specifically sought out a deal with the UFC because he wanted to fight in the Octagon, and not simply because he wanted to be on this card in his adopted hometown of San Jose.
"It really means a lot," he said. "I've fought on many platforms, different styles, but being a UFC fighter now, being the co-main event, definitely is a dream come true. Just earlier this morning I was looking at the picture where I was at the refugee camp, and now being in the co-main event of the UFC, it's a dream come true. I'm very excited and I'm going to be ready to rock and roll and give the fans what they want to see."

Women's AMA Motocross National Championship numbers for 2011 season
Beginning last season, MX Sports Pro Racing implemented a new numbering system for the Women's AMA National Motocross championship. In years past, riders selected their numbers based on availability and order of selection was determined by where a rider finished in the standings the previous season. While the champion was designated to wear the number one plate, all other competitors were permitted to select any number that was available.
The 2010 campaign marked the debut of a new numbering system that determines a rider's number by where she finished the previous season. As a result, one's finishing position in the championship would serve as her number for the following season.
While Women's MX Champion Jessica Patterson will enter 2011 with the #1 plate on her bike, jersey and helmet, below is a list of the remaining numbers for next season's MotorcycleUSA Women's Motocross Championship in accordance to each woman's position in the final standings for 2010:

On the eve of fight Evans changes his tune, now likes Jackson?s chances
Rashad Evans loves screwing with Jon Jones, so it doesn't come as a shocker that a little over 24 hours away from Jones' showdown against Quinton Jackson, "Suga" is now leaning towards "Rampage" at UFC 135.
Evans got a chance to see how serious Jackson was training for the fight:
"Yeah. I went to Muscle Pharm yesterday and I walked through the facility and I seen some of the things that he was doing and then I seen him and he was looking good, better than I've ever seen him before and I was actually really surprised. I just think that a guy like that that can get focused and get dialed Is a dangerous guy if he can get focused and dialed in. I think Jon Jones' mistake is he thinks he's too good right now. He thinks he can't be beat," Evans told 106.7 The Fan.
He also has extensive first-hand experience training with Jones and believe he may break at some point tomorrow night.
"Well, I've seen him get pushed in practice and I've seen him be very human and not as good as he looks on TV. I've seen that there's times where he looks great in practice but there's times where I've seen him quit in practice," said Evans.
Evans was really selling Jackson hard:
"A Rampage that's focused is a dangerous Rampage and I think that the biggest problem with Jon Jones is the fact that he's getting so overly confident and cocky that he can't get beat and all he has to do is step in the cage Saturday and collect his belt. I think that's dangerous thinking when you've got somebody in front of you who's been training hard."
Wow, the drama continues on "as the UFC light heavyweights turn." Keep in mind, earlier in the week Evans was having a tough time picking Jackson.
"I think that Jon Jones uses his range and his speed to keep Rampage off balance and at the same time using his ability to take Rampage down to try to impose some of his will. I think Jon tries to get it done, I think he does it standing up," said Evans.

American Suzuki's Plans for the 2012 Supercross and Motocross Seasons Announced
American Suzuki Motor Corporation (ASMC) has announced plans today for the upcoming 2012 AMA Supercross and Motocross seasons. Suzuki has been a dominant force in both series? for over seven years and has been a leader in technology in order to maintain that stronghold with the continued development of the Suzuki fuel-injected RM-Z450. Since its introduction, the RM-Z450 has amassed the most AMA Motocross Championships as well as the most motocross race wins of any four-stroke 450. The RM-Z was also the first four-stroke AMA Supercross Championship 450 and the first fuel-injected 450 to win AMA Supercross and Motocross titles.
Current plans for the 2012 campaign include returning Suzuki rider, Brett Metcalfe. The 27-year-old Australian joined Suzuki at the beginning of the 2011 season with solid credentials and has demonstrated strength, determination and the ability to win aboard the Suzuki RM-Z. Although injuries shortened his 2011 supercross season, Metcalfe has shown his ability during the current motocross season, scoring an overall win as well as two podiums and 3 top five finishes. Metcalfe finished the season a solid fourth in points in the 2011 AMA Pro Motocross series.

With a payday of $10,000, Lorenz Larkin, Ryan Couture and Lavar Johnson were the highest earners at this past Friday's Strikeforce Challengers 19 in Las Vegas.Larkin, who defeated Nick Rossborough in the evening's main event, earned $5,000 to show and another $5,000 to win. Couture and Johnson each received $10,000 flat. Couture, though, won his fight against Maka Watson, while Johnson was submitted by Shawn Jordan.

Red Bull/KTM's Marvin Musquin - 2009 and 2010 FIM World Motocross Champion in the MX 2 class, will race in the inaugural Monster Energy Cup at Las Vegas Sam Boyd Stadium on October 15.
Marvin said: I'm really happy to race at the Monster Energy Cup. It should be a fun race on my 350cc KTM. I've been told the track should be a mix between motocross and supercross, so I am looking forward to seeing the final layout. My goal is to have fun and be out in front with the other big supercross riders and get some valuable experience before next year.
Marvin is coming off his best finishes of his first season in the USA, earning third overall at each of the final two race on the AMA MX Championship, and will represent the growing list of international riders competing in the Monster Energy Cup.

UFC 135 Results: Travis Browne decisions Rob Broughton in Denver
Travis Browne remained undefeated in the UFC on Saturday, defeating Rob Broughton by decision at UFC 135.
In a very uninspired fight, Browne out-worked Broughton and barely staved off exhaustion to hold on to the decision victory.
Broughton landed a few strikes throughout the fifteen minute time-frame, but Browne pressed the action throughout, and took him down on a few occasions as well to pick up his third win in the UFC. Broughton is now 1-1 in the Octagon.

UFC bantamweight Nick Pace says he's fighting Miguel Torres at UFC 139
A bantamweight bout between former WEC Champ Miguel Torres and Nick Pace appears to be in the works for UFC 139 this November, as Pace posted on Twitter that the fight would be happening on that card.
Torres hopes to rebound from a questionable decision loss to Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson in May, while Pace hopes to bounce back from a loss to Ivan Menjivar last month at UFC 133.
UFC 139 takes place on Nov. 19 from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., headlined by the light heavyweight bout between Dan Henderson and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

Where supercross started - the fabled Los Angeles Coliseum in 1972. This video is from 1985 at the L. A. Coliseum Supercross.
This video is part 1 of 2. I wanted to get it up for you as quickly as possible. In this video, for better or worse, you'll see a lot of me (I'm number 5 on a Yamaha). But in the second video that's coming, you'll see a lot more of my friends in the race like David Bailey, Bob Hannah, Jeff Ward, Goat Breker, Broc Glover, Ron Lechien, Johnny O'Mara, and others.
I think in 1985, we ran two 'main events' at each supercross. Part of what you see here (if my memory is correct) is me winning the first 'main event'.
And stay tuned for the second video! Both videos have the fabled Peristyle uphill / downhill. On the eve of fight Evans changes his tune, now likes Jackson?s chances
Rashad Evans loves screwing with Jon Jones, so it doesn't come as a shocker that a little over 24 hours away from Jones' showdown against Quinton Jackson, "Suga" is now leaning towards "Rampage" at UFC 135.
Evans got a chance to see how serious Jackson was training for the fight:
"Yeah. I went to Muscle Pharm yesterday and I walked through the facility and I seen some of the things that he was doing and then I seen him and he was looking good, better than I've ever seen him before and I was actually really surprised. I just think that a guy like that that can get focused and get dialed Is a dangerous guy if he can get focused and dialed in. I think Jon Jones' mistake is he thinks he's too good right now. He thinks he can't be beat," Evans told 106.7 The Fan.
He also has extensive first-hand experience training with Jones and believe he may break at some point tomorrow night.
"Well, I've seen him get pushed in practice and I've seen him be very human and not as good as he looks on TV. I've seen that there's times where he looks great in practice but there's times where I've seen him quit in practice," said Evans.
Evans was really selling Jackson hard:
"A Rampage that's focused is a dangerous Rampage and I think that the biggest problem with Jon Jones is the fact that he's getting so overly confident and cocky that he can't get beat and all he has to do is step in the cage Saturday and collect his belt. I think that's dangerous thinking when you've got somebody in front of you who's been training hard."
Wow, the drama continues on "as the UFC light heavyweights turn." Keep in mind, earlier in the week Evans was having a tough time picking Jackson.
"I think that Jon Jones uses his range and his speed to keep Rampage off balance and at the same time using his ability to take Rampage down to try to impose some of his will. I think Jon tries to get it done, I think he does it standing up," said Evans.

A fighter's ability to trounce lower level guys is usually a pretty good indicator of how good they are. If you subscribe to this idea, then performances against Stephan Bonnar, Matt Hamill, Brandon Vera, and Ryan Bader probably indicate that Jon Jones is an elite fighter. And Jon Jones is most certainly an elite fighter. However, plowing through the lower and even mid-tier of the light heavyweight division doesn't suggest much of anything in regards to how good Jon Jones is relative to other elite fighters at 205 pounds.
Undefeated fighters being expected to rule the light heavyweight division isn't anything new. Most seem to be so caught up in the excitement over Jon Jones that they tend to forget the other fighter who was recently undefeated, untouchable and captured light heavyweight gold, Lyoto Machida.
Two years ago, Lyoto Machida was every bit as fawned over as Jon Jones is now. Machida was never challenged en route to his first UFC title shot, and in fact he never even lost a round. Machida was so elusive and so good at dictating distance that he never got touched. When Machida finally got his crack at then UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Rashad Evans, he destroyed him. Evans went into that fight with the worst possible approach to fighting Machida, and he paid the price. Lyoto Machida looked so dominant that after the bout, MMA Live analyst and UFC fighter Kenny Florian said that Machida was "two years ahead" of the light heavyweight division.
That was of course, until he met up with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 104. At the time, "Shogun" was just building up steam after a lackluster start to his UFC career, and people thought he was going to get steamrolled by Machida. Prior to this bout, Dana White released statistics indicating that Lyoto Machida was the "least hit fighter in MMA history." I won't interrupt the Jon Jones comparison by going into detail about who came out on top in one of the more controversial decisions in MMA history, but suffice to say at the end of this bout, the aura around Lyoto Machida was gone.
The biggest takeaway from the brief "Machida Era" is that following the destruction of the incumbent Light Heavyweight Champion, Lyoto Machida was untouchable and no one could even imagine him dropping a round, let alone a fight. One fight later, he was just another elite light heavyweight.
Fast forward two years, and this story mirrors Jon Jones' rise almost perfectly. The dominant streak, the brutal victory over the champion, and the title defense against a battle tested former champion all reek of "Machida Era." To make things even creepier, UFC 135: Jones vs. Rampage is exactly 23 months removed UFC 104: Machida vs. Shogun. All Jon Jones is missing to complete the Lyoto Machida story is a loss.
Obviously MMA fans tempering their expectations for a dominant fighter is a bridge too far, but surely someone out there has to realize that Jones being a 7 to 1 favorite over a top shelf competitor like Quinton "Rampage" Jackson is a bit too much. Likewise, ranking Jones #3 pound-for-pound and calling for his participation in legacy fights are a bit too soon for a fighter just coming into his own.
As we saw with Lyoto Machida, just because you haven't been in a bad spot doesn't mean you can't be put in one.� Similarly, just because you haven't been hit doesn't mean you can't be knocked into oblivion by a massive right hand. Regardless of the outcome this Saturday night, Jon Jones will still be an elite fighter.
Jones' ability to crush good fighters is no longer in question; however whether or not he can dominate the dominators of the sport long-term remains to be seen.

RJ SAYS: Hidden Supercross Treasures
This 2010 Supercross season has gone exactly as no one expected. Everyone figured it was going to be a battle between the same two supercross 'titans' as last season - James Stewart and Chad Reed. Last year after 17 races they were the top two, with James the champion by four points over Chad.
To everyone's surprise, even their own, both are currently not racing - injured. They are watching what is essentially a 450 Supercross 'rookie' have a phenomenal year so far (Ryan Dungey).
A hidden treasure is not Ryan Dungey doing so well. I felt, as many others did, that he would have a great year. Based on the following: he's done well & won on a 450 before this season, all the confidence he had coming into this season from winning two championships in 2009 (the 250 West Lites Supercross, and the 250 AMA Outdoor Motocross) and his tremendous riding on a 450 for Team USA at the recent Motocross des Nations in Italy in October.
